Housing associations are non-profit making organisations, run by professional staff, but controlled by voluntary management committees. Housing associations get grants from the Government’s national housing agency – Communities Scotland - towards the cost of building homes for rent or shared ownership and low cost home ownership schemes.
There are around 200 housing associations and housing co-operatives in Scotland. In Argyll and Bute there are four local associations and eight national associations. How to apply to any of these associations?
If you are a tenant of a housing association and would like advice or information on this, please go to our section on ‘being a housing association tenant’.
Further information on housing associations is available from both Scottish Government and the Scottish Federation of Housing Associations.
Housing associations also take part in government schemes which mean that you can partly buy your home, meaning that it can be easier to afford your own home, known as ‘Low Cost Home Ownership’ schemes.
